Edmonton... Environment Minister Rob Renner travelled to Cancun, Mexico to represent Alberta’s interests and priorities for a global greenhouse gas reduction framework at the United Nation’s 16th annual climate change conference (COP16) from December 6 to 10.

“The world must find solutions to the challenge of meeting a growing global energy demand, retaining economic growth and reducing emissions,” said Renner. “While climate change is the focus in Cancun, others will want to hear about the environmental performance of our oil sands. I will take this opportunity to talk about Alberta’s successes, challenges and the importance of our energy resource to all Canadians. We have a record to be proud of and an important story to tell.”
As a part of the Canadian delegation at COP16, Alberta will continue to put forward priorities for an international agreement that is fair, achievable and transparent. From the province’s perspective, an agreement must include all emitters and have the right focus on technology development and deployment, while creating confidence that the world can reduce emissions and have strong economies.

Renner will also meet with other jurisdictions to discuss Alberta’s:

$2-billion investment in carbon capture and storage;
experience operating North America’s only emission reduction program;
mandatory targets for all large emitters;
regulated offset market;
price on carbon; and
clean energy technology fund, which has already collected $187 million.
The estimated cost for Renner and his Executive Assistant to attend for five days is $4,500.

Rishchynski:Ambassador to Mexico

Guillermo E. Rishchynski was appointed as Canada’s Ambassador to the United Mexican States in September 2007.
The Ambassador was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1953 and was raised in Panama and the United States before returning to Canada to complete university studies at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he obtained an Honours B.A. in Political Science in 1975. He has also undertaken Graduate Studies at the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa. He speaks English, Spanish, French and Portuguese fluently, and has participated as a speaker and panellist at numerous international conferences and fora.

Ingenuity, Money and Norwegian know how! Interesting!

Biodiversity Sub-plenary Session: Forest Day

5 December 2010, Cancun Center, Conventions and Exhibitions, Boulevard Kukulcan, Cancún

The aim of this session at Forest Day 4 is to bring together a group of key experts and decision makers to identify and promote
synergies between efforts to safeguard biodiversity, tackle climate change, and implement sustainable forest management.
We will discuss achievements of the International Year of Biodiversity, and identify further opportunities for synergies in policy
and practice during the International Year of Forests in 2011 and towards Rio+20 in 2012.
Encouraging examples exist of the inclusion of biodiversity objectives in pilot and demonstration activities for Reducing
Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), as well as in national climate change adaptation efforts.
The session will build on successful efforts at national level to conserve, restore and sustainably use forest biodiversity in
support of climate change mitigation and adaptation, and it will identify how the international policy framework could further
support such synergies.

A high level panel will address the following issues:
1. How are national governments mainstreaming biodiversity objectives into REDD+ pilot and demonstration activities?
2. How can countries harness the potential of forest biodiversity for climate change adaptation?
3. How can the international policy framework better support countries in their efforts to achieve biodiversity and climate
change synergies?
4. What opportunities for forest biodiversity lie ahead in the International Year of Forests 2011 and towards Rio +20 in 2012,
and how can we best use them?

The leader of the International Union of Architects (UIA), Louise Cox, presented the "Notice of Cancun," after the demonstration in the town of Climate Change. Cox said it is necessary to work against climate change to keep our way of life and local heritage.

According to the document explains, the architectural design can’t be independent of its environment must be constructive and responsible to the environment.Buildings must have a strong foundation to nurture the welfare of its inhabitants, who are comfortable while sustainable and affordable for everyone.

The future vision of the architects needs to include an appreciation of the natural principles of environment, cultural heritage and use materials that are available in the region.

Through the "Notice of Cancun," the UIA want to disseminate and reinforce the strategy Architectural Design Manager launched during the COP15 in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 2009. The members of this NGO are committed to building a sustainable world through design and ensure that architects take a responsible attitude.

The trip out to the tar sands tailings pond reminded me of other recent trips to places where indigenous people were trying to survive.

It recalled for me a trip out to the Russian Arctic earlier this year to visit a group of Saami (Indigenous) reindeer herders struggling to maintain their way of life, and also the work I did last year with a group of Amazonian peoples who were trying to stop oil companies and oil spills in the Peruvian jungles.

But in the end this was far worse, even compared with those two dire situations, and it was being promoted by the Canadian and Alberta governments.

We left on a pair of four wheelers in the afternoon, embracing the freezing temperatures and snow for about six hours to gather footage of what I was promised would be a shocking find. And it was -- when we finally arrived on the site of the Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. -- CNRL -- tailings pond (which, at about five-km long and one-km wide, was more of a lake), we saw tailings being released on the opposite shore, flowing out and covering the muskeg and bush underneath. I was accompanied by Mike Orr, a councillor in the community of Fort McKay and avid hunter and trapper, and his daughter.

Here we were, standing on traplines and hunting trails that remain in use by members of the Fort McKay First Nation, as the toxic waste covered many hectares with an oily ooze...

and the onset of Runaway Climate Change
David Wasdell delivered this copiously illustrated presentation on the 29th June 2008 to the Strategy-Planning workshop of the Tällberg Forum in the heart of Sweden. It was subsequently recorded in studio conditions and beautifully produced by the staff team of the Tällberg Foundation who also added an introduction by their Chairman, Bo Ekman.

After a basic introduction to climate dynamics, the powerful feedback system, already accelerating climate change, is analysed. It is argued that we have already passed the tipping point that marks the onset of runaway climate change, and are fast approaching the critical threshold beyond which the behaviour becomes unstoppable. The presentation concludes with an outline of the global strategy now urgently required to re-stabilise the life-support system of Planet Earth.
